Description

During this 4-part series, school teams will learn how to leverage the resources included in the NEWLY PUBLISHED toolkit, entitled Getting Started with Restorative Practices, from the Center for Education Equity. Participants will learn the rational and results of implementing a Restorative Practices approach to building student, staff, and family relationships and a positive school climate, that yields increased instructional time because students are rarely suspended from school for disciplinary reasons. Dates: November 3, 2021 - November 4, 2021 – January 18, 2022 - March 8, 2022

November 3rd & November 4th 2021 (2 days) School teams will learn a framework to guide Restorative Practices and see how it relates to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and the social emotional needs of all students. There will be full-group presentations and discussion, including videos about successful programs at elementary and secondary levels. Concepts addressed will include: 

•Traditional vs. Restorative approach to discipline 

•Components of Restorative Practices, including circles, restorative chats, conferences, and community conferences 

•Ten Ways to Begin or Strengthen a Restorative Practices Approach 

•Six Actions for School Leaders 

School teams will have team-time will design the way they will launch, or go deeper with Restorative Practice in their schools, using Getting Started with Restorative Practices and other identified resources. Participants will leave with documents they have created, specific to their context, that they may use to launch, or continue their implementation of Restorative Practices.

January 20th 2022 & March 8th 2022 (1-day follow-up sessions) Participants will learn how to: 

•Manage School-wide Adoption of Restorative Practices- The Concerns Based Adoption Model and Levels of Use 

•Adopt /Adapt/ Design Professional Learning Activities for teachers and staff in your context •

Identify and address barriers to Restorative Practices 

•Integrate students’ roles in Restorative Practices- Peer Mediation and Peer Juries •Create/Strengthen structures in your school for successful implementation 

Participants in the November sessions will be surveyed about successes and challenges to refine the exact agendas of the January and March sessions. They also will be asked if they would be willing to share works in progress and/or small successes, as the full group learns more ways to involve all staff in their shift in mindset to Restorative Practices. They will also explore ways to involve students in the success of Restorative Practices. There will be full-group and topical sessions to increase participants’ knowledge and skills about specific restorative practices, as well as to how address identified challenges. Teams will also work with each other as Thought-Partners on specific areas of mutual interest.
